Allow me to re-introduce to you my favorite time of year — SalgadoFest!
For those who don’t know, SalgadoFest is an annual vacation / reunion we have with my mom’s side of the family. It’s basically a week-long mushy love fest.
We like to call it the Coachella of family vacations.
Last year, we had SalgadoFest in Destin, Florida. This year we celebrated our 7th #SalgadoFest in St. Augustine, Florida.
St. Augustine is a magical place because it’s a city filled with so much history, nice restaurants and of course, beach. What better place to be with my favorite people ever?
The hot topic of this trip was that it would be the last SalgadoFest before Mark and I get married and it got very real — we’re transitioning to the “adult table.”
And we did sit at the adult table one night and I kind of freaked out.
Besides the fun memories (and my quarter-life crisis), every year this trip brings me closer to my sisters and cousins. As the oldest of the clan (it’s 11 of us), it’s been so beautiful to watch them grow and see our relationship shift from childhood to adulthood.
The week consisted of my mom’s famous “what do you want in life” discussions, played “tourist” in the city with our own private trolly that fit 28 people, sunrise yoga, laughed until our stomachs hurt as we reminisced on childhood memories and of course, cried.
This was the first year I had to part ways alone. The South Carolina people drove north, the Miami people drove south and I, because my uncle left to NYC before, flew all by myself back to the city. So naturally, I sobbed all the way to the airport.
Though leaving is tough, it’s a beautiful reminder of how blessed I am to share memories like this with my parents, sisters, aunts, uncles, cousins and most importantly, my grandparents.
The instructor must’ve hated us because we could not stop giggling. Can you imagine my dad doing a downward dog? I peed.
